Party in the Streets at PV Carnival

Now is the time to party! In Mexico, each year during the last weeks of February or early March is the annual Carnival event that occurs just a few days before Ash Wednesday and Lent. Puerto Vallarta and other Mexican cities will also be celebrating the Carnival such as the towns Mazatlan, Tepoztlán, Cozumel, Huejotzingo, Veracruz, and Chamula. The celebration is kicked up to the next level in Veracruz, Cozumel, and Mazatlan so much so that it is very similar to the Mardi Gras that occurs in New Orleans. You don’t want to miss the party in the streets at Carnival in Puerto Vallarta.

The Carnival History

Every year during spring, many cities, and towns in Mexico celebrate Carnival. In Spanish, it is known as “Carnaval”. The week before Ash Wednesday is called Miercoles de Cenizas in Spanish which signals the start of Lent and the time period before Easter. Each year, the Carnival celebration dates do vary, but the Carnival celebrations are always held before Ash Wednesday. In 2019, the Carnival celebrations will start on February 27th and run through March 5th. On Tuesday, March 5th is the biggest Carnival celebration and a party of it all. This day is known as Mardi Gras in French, which actually means “Fat Tuesday” in English and in Spanish it is known as “Martes de Carnaval”.

Dancing, Parades, Music, and Costumes

The Carnival celebration in Puerto Vallarta is a huge street party like nothing you have ever witnessed before. In Old Town Puerto Vallarta (Zona Romantica), which is the party zone year-round, the Carnival celebration will fill the streets with added excitement and exhilaration. The festive mood is increased during Carnival, and all visitors will be amazed at all the sights and sounds. Visitors will enjoy entertaining parades, dancers dressed in vibrant costumes, and delicious drinks and foods. Partygoers can soak up the fun in the streets and enjoy a ton of people watching, too. During the Carnival party, there will be several Caribbean inspired concerts that are scheduled to take place, and national and local talent will be featured. Visitors can enjoy live music while they enjoy a variety of tasty foods and drinks, and purchasing unique souvenirs will remind you of the great party that you experienced. The Carnival party will be held in the Old Town Puerto Vallarta cobblestone streets near the Lazaro Cardenas Park. The Puerto Vallarta Carnival is very popular, so you will want to make sure that you book your accommodations in advance. If you are able to you should try to arrive in Puerto Vallarta just a couple days before the Carnival celebration is scheduled to begin.
